Early January, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (8-4) will be tested arguably by one of the best women basketball players we’ve ever seen. Despite USC (11-1) having an unbelievable team, their leader JuJu Watkins has proved to be nearly unstoppable. In her latest outing with another premier No.1 overall pick, Paige Bueckers, she recorded 25 points, six rebounds and five assists on the road. This matchup is highly anticipated because both stars for Rutgers and USC are having career seasons. In fact, the anticipation is leaving many on the edge of their seats.
Currently, Rutgers star point guard and New Jersey native Kiyomi McMiller is leading all freshmen in the country in scoring (20.9) and ranks No.13 amongst the top 50 scorers in the nation. While Watkins has proven herself on the biggest stages, McMiller appears to be a star in the making. Rutgers head coach Coquese Wahsington always continues to praise and support McMiller as she continues to build around the rising star.
“One thing Kiyomi does is she helps with our pace, when we’re getting out in transition we’re really tough to stop,” Washington stated. “I like the fact we were able to do that, which transferred into our halfcourt offense where we attacked and moved the ball side to side. … We just want to keep building on that.”
McMiller has been a heaven sent for the Scarlet Knights as they’ve struggled to find consistent offense and a leader. The talents of McMiller combined with veteran forward Destiny Adams has proven to be essential to their offensive success. The tandem have built a ton of chemistry since the season has started and have extreme confidence within one another.
“I think me and Destiny work very well together, and I think when we both get going I don’t believe anybody can stop us,” McMiller explained. “I don’t care what anybody says because I believe it and until someone proves it wrong, it is what it is at that point.”
Kiyomi McMiller Underrated Skill Sets
Watkins has proven to be a well-rounded player, therefore being an exceptional defender. Yet, many don’t consider how great defense can lead to easier offensive possessions. That said, McMiller has proven to be an exceptional on-ball defender. This last game, she caused five turnovers that led to easy points for the Scarlet Knights. McMiller defense
“Kiyomi’s a really good on-ball defender, she’s got quick hands and feet,” Washington stated. “She keeps people in front of her, and she puts pressure on the ball. Most importantly, she makes people make mistakes and are then able to capitalize off that.”
Outside of her defensive craftiness, she’s often compared to arguably the greatest ball handler the world’s ever seen, Kyrie Irving. While the comparison may be optimistic, her handles and playmaking ability has made McMiller enjoyable to watch. For example, against Wagner, McMiller made a phenomenal move that went viral and has shocked the world. She’s become a walking highlight reel and even more enjoyable teammate.

“I think we’re starting to understand each other more, and I think that will play a really big part when it comes to B1G Ten play,” McMiller continued. “It’s something I really look forward to.”
The Clash of Titans
Sunday night, these two are set to face off Jan. 5th. This game will determine a lot moving forward and more importantly will be a great test for the upcoming Scarlet Knights. USC being led by Watkins and star forward Kiki Irafen will only sharpen their sword as they’re expected to make a late run come March.
