Destiny Adams, originally from the Garden State, has been a prominent figure in New Jersey basketball for years. Her transition to Rutgers was a return home, a chance to play in front of her family, friends, and the loyal New Jersey fans who had watched her journey from high school to college.
“When I came here and talked about returning home and playing in front of family and friends, I made an impact in the entire state,” Adams reflects.
Rutgers head coach Coquese Washington has been a huge proponent of Adams’ growth as a player and person. “I love me some Destiny Adams. She’s such a joy to coach. She plays with a passion, determination, competitiveness, and fire that’s indescribable,” said Washington. These qualities have not only helped Adams succeed on the court, but they’ve also set her apart as a leader and an example for her teammates.
A Versatile, Multi-Dimensional Threat
Adams' skill set has evolved tremendously during her time at Rutgers, especially in developing her perimeter game. “Since I’ve been here, I really been working on my game from the perimeter,” Adams explains. “I do believe it’s been getting better, but overall I just think my teammates know when to find me in the perfect spots to help me score.” Her chemistry with her teammates has become apparent as they find her in the right positions to capitalize on her growing range.
Her versatility, however, is not just in her scoring. Adams has been a standout on both ends of the floor, using her athleticism to create mismatches. Assistant coach John Hampton highlights her defensive prowess, noting that Adams leads the Big Ten in steals and charges taken. “She’s a 6’3” athletic, high-motor baller. I think a lot of teams will be attracted to her in the WNBA,” Hampton remarked.
Adams’ two-way play was on full display in a matchup against UCLA, where she faced off with 6’7” star center Lauren Betts. Despite the size difference, Adams took the game outside, showcasing her growth as a perimeter threat. “I think Destiny Adams has shown throughout the season that she’s one of the best forwards in the country, and she can play against anybody,” Washington said after the game. Indeed, Adams recorded a double-double against Betts, proving that she can compete at the highest level and adapt her game to different challenges.
A High Motor and Relentless Drive
Perhaps the most striking characteristic of Adams’ game is her relentless aggression. UCLA head coach Cori Close, whose team faced off against Adams in a tough matchup, was quick to praise her all-around effort: “She’s the aggressor on every play and I just think that’s going to take you such a long way. When you set the aggression, you’re going to make good things happen.”
Adams’ motor never stops. She consistently outworks her opponents, using her speed, strength, and determination to impose her will on the game. Her 15 points and 13 rebounds in that UCLA game were a testament to her hard-nosed approach, and her ability to impact the game in multiple ways.
The WNBA Future
Adams has the potential to be a game-changer in the WNBA. Her combination of size, athleticism, and skill make her a highly coveted prospect. Whether it’s her rebounding, scoring ability, or her defensive tenacity, she brings a lot to the table for any team. “Sky’s the limit for her,” Hampton said. Her work ethic and competitive spirit will serve her well as she transitions to the professional ranks.
As Adams’ time at Rutgers comes to a close, her legacy is already firmly established. “I am going to miss her terribly when she’s gone,” Coach Washington reflected. “But this kid, man, I love this kid to death and what she’s done for this program.” Her leadership and contributions will be remembered for years to come, not only for her statistical achievements but also for the heart and soul she brought to the Scarlet Knights.
Her teammates have also spoken highly of her, with NBA prospect and star guard Dylan Harper calling Adams a “killer” on the court, while senior guard JoJo Lacey commended her leadership, saying, “I think she’s a great teammate and as much as we lean on them, they lean on us.”
Conclusion
As Destiny Adams gears up for the next chapter of her basketball career in the WNBA, it’s clear that her journey at Rutgers has been nothing short of spectacular. From her perimeter shooting improvements to her tenacious defense and relentless drive, Adams has left an indelible impact on the Scarlet Knights program. Her future is bright, and the WNBA will soon witness the fierce competitor who made a mark at Rutgers and is ready to do the same on the national stage.
