A Crowd That Turns Pressure Into Fuel
For Mackenzie Robinson, competing at the Penn Relays is not just another stop in the season, it is a statement opportunity. Every time she steps on the track, she is aware that she is representing Howard University, an HBCU competing directly against some of the most established programs in the country.
The energy in Philadelphia makes that responsibility feel even bigger. Robinson describes how the crowd presence instantly changes the race environment, especially when Howard supporters show up in force from Washington, D.C.
“Every time we’re at Penn Relays, it doesn’t matter where I’m at, what relay I’m doing, I hear people in the crowd yelling, ‘Go Howard, go Howard.’”
That support does more than encourage her, it actively changes how she competes.
“It made me run faster,” she admitted. “It made me hit another gear.”
In a sport where milliseconds matter, that emotional lift becomes performance fuel.
Running for Something Larger Than Yourself
Robinson understands that her performance carries meaning beyond personal results. Howard’s recent success, including a historic 4x100 relay run to the NCAA Championship final, has elevated expectations and visibility for the program.
“That was our first year medaling in that,” she said. “Coming to these meets and showing everybody that HBCUs can do it as well, it really is unbelievable.”
Every race becomes another chance to reinforce that message. Howard is not just participating in elite meets, it is competing to win them.
The Moment Everything Clicked
When asked about her “Sh3GotGame Moment,” Robinson did not point to a title or championship. Instead, she reflected on a breakthrough performance in the 4x200 relay at Penn Relays.
“Last year when we were here for the 4 by 2, I was also pop off,” she said. “That was a good moment, but I feel like it’s gonna get better than that.”
That perspective reveals a key part of her identity as an athlete. Success is not a peak, it is a stepping stone.
Built on Winning, Driven by Consistency
Inside the Howard program, excellence is expected, not celebrated as an exception. Season after season, the team continues to perform at a high level, especially in championship settings.
“So far I would probably say our indoor conference,” Robinson explained. “We win like every single year. So it just feels good winning with another group of girls every single year.”
That consistency has helped build a culture where new athletes quickly understand the standard they are stepping into.
A Legacy Still in Motion
For Robinson and Howard track, the story is still being written. The foundation is strong, the results are proven, but the belief inside the program is that the best moments are still ahead.
At this stage, every race is more than competition. It is continuation of a legacy that is still growing, still proving itself, and still pushing forward.
