For Jasmine Sharps, the journey has never been about shortcuts or instant validation. It’s about construction, patience, and belief, the kind that doesn’t waver when the spotlight gets bright or the competition gets tougher. As a freshman competing at one of the highest levels of collegiate track, Sharps isn’t just participating, she’s positioning herself to be part of something bigger.
Big Ten vs. SEC: A Battle of Identity and Legacy
Sharps doesn’t shy away from the conversation. When asked about the difference between the Big Ten and the SEC, two powerhouse conferences often placed side by side, she keeps it real.
“It’s a dog-eat-dog world,” she explains. “We’re both here to fight, and we’re both here to stay.”
“There’s only one conference that won both the NCAA championship in football and basketball,” she notes. “And we’re here to stay in track too.”
“I love building,” she says. “There’s nothing better than being on the underdog and showing off.”
The Freshman Mentality: No Fear, No Limits
That same mentality shows up in how she approaches her role as a freshman. While many athletes ease into the moment, adjusting to the scale and pressure, Sharps walks in with a different energy.
“The lights are never too big,” she says confidently. “Any room I’m put in, I’m meant to be in.”
It’s a mindset rooted in self-awareness and belief. Even when performances don’t go exactly as planned, her foundation doesn’t shake. She understands that growth isn’t linear, and confidence isn’t conditional.
“As freshmen, people look at us like we’re babies,” she adds. “But we’re here to compete and we’re here to stay.”
That statement isn’t just about her, it’s about a generation of young athletes stepping into spaces that once felt unreachable and owning them without hesitation.
A Love That Started Early
“I’ve been running since I was six,” she says. “I used to run in a dress and tights before I was even old enough.”
“That’s when I knew,” she recalls. “This is for me. I’m about to come here and dominate.”
“My heart and soul is on the track.”
Maryland Pride: More Than a Team
“Maryland means family,” she says. “We support each other no matter what school you go to.”
“We come to take over Philly every time,” she says with a smile. “And we do just that.”
Advice for the Next Generation
“Stay in your lane. Focus on your journey,” she says. “Nobody’s path is the same.”
“Some people’s time is now. Yours might be three years from now,” she explains. “Believe in yourself even if nobody else does.”
The Bigger Picture
Jasmine Sharps represents more than just a rising track star. She embodies a philosophy, one centered on growth, resilience, and authenticity. Whether it’s choosing to build within the Big Ten, embracing the pressure as a freshman, or staying grounded in her purpose, she’s carving out a path that’s uniquely her own.
