A New Face in a Growing Game
At just 17 years old, Mariana "Melii" Medina is stepping into a space that is not only physically demanding, but historically overlooked, women’s tackle football. Competing against seasoned veterans, many with over a decade of experience, Medina is not just participating, she is making a statement.
Her presence alone reflects the rapid growth of women’s sports, particularly in football, where opportunities are finally beginning to expand. But for Medina, this moment is about more than visibility, it is about proving that she belongs.
“The mindset is making a name for myself,” she said. “A lot of my teammates have been in the game for ten plus years.”
But her résumé tells a different story.
From Underrated to Unstoppable
Medina’s journey did not begin with immediate recognition. Like many young athletes breaking into male-dominated spaces, she faced doubt early on.
“People underestimate me due to my age,” she said. “They think I’m just here for fun.”
She began playing flag football seven years ago before making a bold transition during high school. Encouraged by her coach, Medina left soccer behind and fully committed to football, eventually becoming a kicker on her high school’s tackle team.
For four years, she stood alone as the only girl on an all-boys roster.
That experience shaped her toughness, confidence, and understanding of the game at a level far beyond her years.
Opening Doors for the Next Generation
For Medina, football is more than competition, it is a platform for change.
“In my opinion, it’s extremely important,” she said. “Football is the most physical sport. When people see that females can do the exact same things as men, it opens doors.”
Those doors extend far beyond the field. Representation in such a physically demanding sport challenges outdated perceptions and creates new pathways for young girls watching from the sidelines.
Medina understands that her journey carries weight, especially for those who may not yet see themselves in the sport.
More Than an Athlete
While her impact on the field continues to grow, Medina’s ambitions stretch even further. Her long-term goal is to work in the NFL, specifically in analytics or media, proving that her understanding of the game goes beyond physical performance.
“I actually want to work in the NFL with analytics or in media,” she said.
That vision reflects a broader shift in how athletes are approaching their futures, blending sport with career development and long-term opportunity.
A Star in the Making
Medina has already experienced defining moments in her young career. Receiving her first offer, and now accumulating over 20 opportunities in flag football, marked a turning point.
