For Country, Not Just Self
For Ava Fajardo, basketball has always meant more than wins and statistics. But representing the Philippines national team elevated the game to something far deeper.
“Playing for the Philippine national team is one of those biggest things,” Fajardo said. “It’s so much different from playing high school or AAU because I’m playing for something way bigger than me and my family. It’s like playing for a country.”
That perspective reshaped her understanding of competition. Wearing her country’s name across her chest carried weight—history, pride, expectation. Winning Division B with the national team wasn’t just a championship moment; it was validation.
“Winning Division B for the team, that was a really big moment,” she said it was proof that she could rise when the stakes extended far beyond herself.
Pressure Is a Privilege
As one of the few players from her background to reach this level, Fajardo understands the spotlight that follows her. Young girls who see themselves in her story are watching closely.
“It does come with a little bit of pressure,” she admitted. “But I always tell myself pressure is a privilege.”
Rather than shy away from expectations, she embraces them. The pressure signals opportunity. It means someone believes in her enough to care.
“I’m very grateful that I’m in this position and that there are people that look up to me,” she said. “Knowing that they have confidence in me gives me confidence in myself.”
That cycle of belief others pouring into her, her pouring back into the game eventually has become fuel.
Built on Support and Joy
Fajardo’s growth hasn’t happened alone. She credits her older sister, her father, coaches, and teammates for surrounding her with constant encouragement.
“Surround yourself with people who want you to be better and want you to succeed,” she said. “That’s a very important part.”
Three years of playing alongside close teammates has strengthened not just chemistry, but trust. On the court, that familiarity shows in seamless reads and shared instincts. Off the court, it reinforces her foundation.
Just as important as support is joy.
“Finding a lot of joy in playing basketball is important,” she said.
A Special New Chapter
With her senior year underway and Drexel University ahead, Fajardo describes this next phase in one word: “special.”
There’s less pressure now, just opportunity. A tight-knit senior group. Strong chemistry. A new journey waiting in Philadelphia.
From representing a nation to preparing for college basketball, Ava Fajardo continues to play for something bigger: honor, pride, and the next generation watching her rise.
