Built to Lead: Lois Cook’s Mission Beyond the Game

By John "Woods" Armwood III

More Than a Player, A Movement

For D.C. Divas wide receiver Lois Cook, football has never been just about touchdowns, wins, or championships. It is about representation, resilience, and responsibility. In a sport still carving out space for women, Cook has spent more than two decades proving that women belong on the football field, not as exceptions, but as forces. As women’s football continues to evolve, she sees something bigger unfolding: opportunity.
“The possibilities are endless,” Cook said when discussing the rise of women in sports. “If she can see it, she can be it.”
That belief fuels everything she does, whether she is competing, mentoring, or using her platform to push the game forward for the next generation.

Dominating the Field, Defining Strength

Cook embraces every side of competition. For her, football is a place where power and femininity coexist.
“We like to hit people and not get in trouble for it,” she joked, laughing at the physicality of the game.
But underneath the humor is something deeper. Football gives her the freedom to become the strongest version of herself.
“I love the fact that I get to go on the field and dominate,” Cook explained. “I get to be bigger, better, stronger, faster than the next girl.”\

To Cook, competing is personal. It is about maximizing potential, challenging limits, and showing the world that women are capable of far more than society sometimes assumes. She has done that while balancing another demanding role: motherhood.

Motherhood, Football, and Breaking Limits

Cook is a mother of four sons, and her journey is proof that women do not have to choose between family and ambition.
“I can have my babies and come back and handle business on the field,” she said. “We’re capable of anything and everything.”
Her story carries weight because it speaks to women who often feel boxed in by expectations. Cook wants young girls and women watching her to understand that no limitation placed on them by others has to become permanent.
“Don’t ever let the opinions or limitations of other people dictate where you go in life,” she said. “You’re the only person who can decide your worth.”

The Real "Sh3GotGame Moment"

After winning championships and building a decorated football career, Cook’s defining moment surprisingly did not happen under stadium lights.
It happened online. When videos and posts about football began reaching thousands of young women, messages poured into her inbox from girls asking how they could play.

That changed everything.
“I realized I had a stronger responsibility in this game,” Cook said.
When she was younger, women did not have access to opportunities in football. Now, she sees it as her mission to make sure the next generation does.

Building the Future of Women’s Football

Cook believes women’s football is only beginning. With girls flag football growing rapidly, she sees a pipeline developing into tackle football, creating opportunities for athletes at younger ages than ever before.
“There’s still so far to go,” Cook admitted. “But we’re moving the game forward.”
For Lois Cook, football is no longer just about proving women belong.
It is about ensuring the next generation never has to ask.
