Presence Over Projection
Azzi Fudd has long been known for her shooting touch, her composure, and the ease with which the game seems to slow down when the ball finds her hands. But as her career continues to evolve, so does the way she impacts the floor, often in ways that never appear in a box score.
When asked about leadership and how her role today might carry into the next level, Fudd didn’t look ahead. She stayed rooted exactly where she believes growth happens.
“I don’t think I’ve really thought too much about how now is affecting the future,” Fudd emphasized. “I’m kind of focusing on taking care of now… and how if I do that, I’ll be fine.”
It’s a mindset that cuts through the constant noise surrounding elite players. Projections, expectations, and comparisons come easily. Staying present does not. For Fudd, the discipline of focusing on the moment has become a form of leadership in itself.
Leading When the Rhythm Is Off
Leadership reveals itself most clearly when the game doesn’t feel smooth. On nights when shots don’t fall early or energy lags, the best players understand that forcing control only creates more chaos.
“We got off to a slow start,” Fudd said. “Making sure we were settled, getting where we needed to be, flashing, getting stops, and just locking back in.”
Those are not the words of a scorer chasing numbers. They’re the words of a player reading the game, recognizing when patience matters more than pace, and when defense and spacing can restore order.
Fudd’s influence in those moments comes from awareness. She doesn’t need to dominate possessions to lead them. Sometimes leadership is simply guiding teammates back to structure, reminding a group of who they are and how they want to play.
