More Than the Camera Sees
For viewers watching Amanda Lee deliver the news or cover major events, it's easy to assume the career is filled with bright lights and glamorous moments. But behind every live report is years of preparation, adaptability, and hard work.
"It's definitely not all glitz and glam," Lee said.
Having spent eight years in the news industry before transitioning into freelance journalism, sports coverage, and real estate, Lee understands what it truly takes to succeed in today's media landscape. She explained that modern journalists are expected to be much more than reporters.
"When you're in news, you have to be a great writer. You have to be a great producer, editor. You have to know how to literally do everything and set yourself up to do your live shot and get your own interviews."
As the media industry continues to evolve with digital platforms and social media, Lee believes versatility has become one of the profession's greatest assets.
Finding Freedom Through Growth
After years of working in traditional television news, Lee has embraced a new chapter that has allowed her creativity to flourish.
While reflecting on her career, she admitted she has experienced several defining moments. The first came when she landed her first job as a multimedia journalist and saw herself on television for the very first time.
"I was so proud of myself," she recalled.
Another unforgettable milestone came when she received an Emmy nomination for her breaking news coverage. Today, however, Lee believes she's experiencing another career-defining chapter.
"My career has sort of evolved into me doing freelance," she said. "Now I'm able to do so many things by myself."
From launching her own YouTube content to covering sports and reconnecting with her Philadelphia roots, Lee has discovered a renewed sense of creative freedom.
"I never thought I would really do my own thing, but I'm really enjoying it."
Embracing the Evolution of Journalism
From producing content across multiple platforms to covering breaking news, sports, and developing her own independent content, Lee has continued to expand her skill set. She believes journalists today must be willing to wear multiple hats and constantly evolve alongside the industry.
"Over time as social media takes over now, they're wanting more from social media and they're wanting people to do more streaming," Lee explained. "You have to be able to move and roll with the punches a little bit too."
Although the demands of journalism continue to grow, Lee remains passionate about the profession that has shaped her. It's about continuing to learn, remaining adaptable, and never losing the passion that inspired her to step in front of the camera in the first place.
Serving Her Community
As a North Philadelphia native, Lee understands the importance of using her platform to support the next generation. While attending Brandon Graham's youth football camp, she emphasized how meaningful community events can be for young people.
"It means so much to me to support Philly sports and to support kids," Lee said.
Through years of reporting, she's witnessed firsthand the positive impact that sports and mentorship have on children. Seeing local role models invest in the next generation is something she believes deserves to be celebrated.
For Lee, journalism has never been just about telling stories. It's about highlighting the people making a difference.
Confidence Opens Every Door
If there's one message Amanda Lee hopes young women and aspiring journalists take from her journey, it's to believe in themselves before expecting others to.
"Always be confident in yourself," she said. "Never feel like you don't belong somewhere because you do."
She also encourages young professionals to remain curious, ask questions, continue developing their skills, and surround themselves with people who genuinely support their growth.
"Always network and ask questions," Lee advised. "Keep up on your skills and make those connections."
